How a supercooled liquid borrows structure from the crystal

چکیده
Using computer simulations, we establish that the structure of a supercooled binary atomic liquid mixture consists common neighbour structures similar to those found in equilibrium crystal phase, Laves structure. Despite large accumulation crystal-like structure, represents true metastable and can borrow without being destabilized. We consider whether this feature might be origin all instances liquids strongly favoured local

Crystal nucleation in a supercooled liquid with glassy dynamics.
In simulations of supercooled, high-density liquid silica we study a range of temperature T in which we find both crystal nucleation as well as the characteristic dynamics of a glass forming liquid, including a breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation. We find that the liquid cannot be observed below a homogeneous nucleation limit (HNL) at which the liquid crystallizes faster than it can equil...
متن کاملHow reproducible are dynamic heterogeneities in a supercooled liquid?
The particle dynamics in a liquid exhibits a transient spatial distribution of dynamic heterogeneities. The relationship between this kinetic structure and the underlying particle configuration remains an outstanding problem. In this Letter, we present a general simulation technique for identifying the features of the dynamic heterogeneity which arise due to a specific configuration, as distinc...

The 20,000–30,000 proteins encoded by our genomes all had to come from somewhere originally, and Nature is a great recycler. Although some sections of proteins have arisen recently by co-option of previously noncoding sequence, looking at most protein structures gives you a distinct feeling of déjà vu. Time and again handy functional modules appear in novel guises, doing sort of the same job, b...
متن کاملStructure of ice crystallized from supercooled water.
The freezing of water to ice is fundamentally important to fields as diverse as cloud formation to cryopreservation. At ambient conditions, ice is considered to exist in two crystalline forms: stable hexagonal ice and metastable cubic ice. Using X-ray diffraction data and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that ice that crystallizes homogeneously from supercooled water is neither of these phases....
متن کاملStructural relaxation in a supercooled molecular liquid
– We perform molecular-dynamics simulations of a molecular system in supercooled states for different values of inertia parameters to provide evidence that the long-time dynamics depends only on the equilibrium structure. This observation is consistent with the prediction of the mode-coupling theory for the glass transition and with the hypothesis that the potential energylandscape controls the...
